Religious Education in the Diocese of Gallup
Catechist Formation
The diversity of people, lifestyles, economies, languages, and education make the Diocese of Gallup unique. For these reasons, our catechist formation is unique—not a “one size fits all.” In an effort to meet the needs of people who face:
- Seasonal and nomadic lives
- Housing that is a great distance from a Catholic church
- No transportation
- No resident priest or catechist
Catechist Certification
The certification process for first-time catechists is available through the diocesan religious education office. These are sessions in theology, methodology, and personal spirituality. Formation sessions are given in Gallup, New Mexico, and several other sites throughout the diocese.
Catechist Already Certified
In some instances, catechists come with certification from other dioceses or have other credentials and experience. We ask that these individuals inform their principal and the director of religious education. After receiving the catechist’s credentials, a certificate will be given, and they will be considered a catechist for the Diocese of Gallup.
Recognized Catechist Formation Programs
- Echoes of Faith
- Effective DRE Series
- Virtus “To Protect and To Heal” (This program is required study for all adults working with children in the diocese. Background checks are also required)
- Workshops, conferences, and seminars are considered electives
All certified catechists in active ministry are encouraged to make an annual retreat and engaged in some form of independent study. Some suggestions are small study groups; diocesan ministry sessions; online opportunities; conferences, etc. Anything that fosters a catechist’s growth and development as a Christian is of benefit to the people they serve.
