Diocese of Gallup Found Compliant with Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, the National Review Board, and its Audit Committee-in conjunction with the Secretariat for the Protection of Children and Young People- released its eighth annual report from the 2010 compliance audit of dioceses in the United States.

Archbishop Timothy Dolan, president of the USCCB, says that this "extensive process is a critical accountability tool...demonstrating the seriousness with which you [the nation's bishops] take the promises made in the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People."

The USCCB selected the Gavin Group out of Boston, Massachusetts, to conduct the 2010 audit to determine compliance within United States dioceses and eparchies.

For the first time since the commencement of the current audit protocol, all of the dioceses and eparchies subject to a full, on-site audit were found to be compliant with the Charter.

In a March 2011 letter to the USCCB, William Gavin, president of the Gavin Group, wrote: "Your actions and efforts have demonstrated a sincere dedication of all involved to assist those who have been victimized, to identify and address those who have made them victims, and to restore the trust and confidence in the U.S. Catholic Church."

In a separate letter addressed to Bishop James Wall, William Gavin writes:

"Based on the analysis of the results of the 2010 Full Audit of the Diocese of Gallup, you have been found to be in compliance with the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People."

The Gavin Group goes on to say that the steps taken by the Diocese of Gallup "exceed what is required by the Charter."

There were no further recommendations submitted to the diocese by the Gavin Group or its auditors who conducted the on-site visits.
